I bought the house because it was cheap.
That’s the whole story — or I thought it was.
The basement door stuck when I first tried it, swollen in the frame like it hadn’t been opened in years.
It hadn’t.
The previous owner, Dolores Marsh, died at ninety-one with no children and a will that left everything to a church that didn’t want the property.
I got it for SIXTY THOUSAND DOLLARS under market.
I should have asked why.
The first thing I found was the smell — not rot, not mold, but something older.
Cedar and something else I couldn’t name.
Then I found the wall.
Not a wall, exactly — a section of paneling that didn’t match the rest, newer wood stained to look old.
My contractor, a forgettable man named Dave, tapped it once and said, “That’s hollow.”
He left for another job.
I started pulling boards myself.
Behind the paneling was a door, maybe three feet tall, the kind you’d see on a root cellar.
And behind the door was a room no bigger than a closet, with a cot, a rusted chamber pot, and a wooden box nailed shut.
My hands were shaking when I pulled the lid.
Inside: a birth certificate, a lock of hair tied with kitchen twine, and forty-seven letters bound with a rubber band that crumbled when I touched it.
The birth certificate was dated 1961.
The mother’s name was Dolores Marsh.
The father’s line was BLANK.
I unfolded the first letter.
The handwriting was a child’s — uneven, urgent, the letters too large.
Mama please write back. They say you don’t want me. I don’t believe them. I don’t believe them.
My knees hit the concrete floor.
The last letter was dated 1974.
The return address was a state institution two hours north of here.
And then my phone buzzed — a text from the title company attorney, a woman I’d spoken to once.
Call me immediately. There’s a living heir. He’s been looking for this address for thirty years.
The Part Where I Should Have Put the Box Down
I didn’t call her back right away.
I know how that sounds. But I was sitting on a concrete floor in a room that smelled like cedar and sixty years of sealed air, holding letters written by a child who thought his mother was going to come get him. I wasn’t in a state to be on the phone with an attorney.
The cot was a single, the frame iron, the kind you’d see in an old army surplus photo. The mattress was gone — just the springs, orange with rust, coiled tight like they were still waiting for weight. There was a shelf above it, rough wood, one bracket missing so it tilted. An empty tin cup on the shelf. A candle stub. A small wooden cross hung from a single nail, and whoever hung it had driven that nail in crooked, so the cross sat at an angle, like it was falling.
I sat there long enough that my phone buzzed a second time.
Same number. No text this time.
I climbed out of the room, out of the basement, and stood in my kitchen under the fluorescent light I’d been meaning to replace since I moved in three months ago. My knees had concrete dust on them. My hands were gray.
I read the letters in order. All forty-seven.
The first ones were dated 1967. He would have been six.
His name — the name he signed, in those oversized unsteady letters — was Richie.
Forty-Seven Letters
The early ones were simple. That’s what got me.
Dear Mama. I am fine. We had eggs for breakfast. I miss you. Please come. Love Richie.
He drew a picture on one of them, a house with smoke coming out of the chimney. The house had four windows. He’d colored the door red with what looked like crayon, except the crayon had torn through the paper a little, like he was pressing too hard.
By 1969 the handwriting had gotten smaller, more controlled. He’d learned to spell. The letters got longer, and something in them had shifted.
They told me again that you signed the papers. Mrs. Howell says I have to accept it. I told her I don’t believe the papers are real. She got mad. I don’t care if she gets mad.
By 1971 he’d stopped asking her to come.
He was still writing, still signing Love Richie, but the asking had gone out of it. He was just — reporting. Telling her what he’d eaten, what the weather was, what a kid named Gary had done that was funny. Like he was keeping a record for someone who might read it someday.
The 1973 letters had a different return address. A different institution, further north.
I don’t know what that meant. I still don’t know for certain. But I’ve looked up the name of the place since then, and it wasn’t a school.
The last letter was three sentences.
Mama. I am going to stop writing now. I hope you are well.
No Love before his name. Just: Richie.
What the Attorney Said
Her name was Paula Grint. She picked up on the first ring, which told me she’d been waiting.
She talked fast, the way people do when they’ve been sitting on information and someone finally calls. The short version: Dolores Marsh had filed paperwork in 1966 to have a child committed to state care. The child’s name on the filing was Richard Dale Marsh. The father was not listed anywhere in any document Paula had found, and she’d been looking since the estate cleared probate.
Richard Dale Marsh was sixty-three years old. He lived in a town called Bellhaven, four hours from here, in a house he rented with a man named Carl who was, Paula said carefully, “a longtime companion.”
He’d been searching for his mother’s address since 1994.
“He hired a private investigator twice,” Paula said. “The second one found the property but told him it was owned by Dolores Marsh, still living, and advised him to wait.”
He waited.
Dolores died in February. Richard found out in April, through the investigator checking in on a cold case out of habit. By then the estate had already moved through probate, the church had already declined the property, and I had already bought it.
He didn’t know about me. I didn’t know about him.
Paula said, “He’s not contesting the sale. He doesn’t want the house. He just wants to know — ” She stopped.
“Know what?” I said.
“Whether there’s anything left of hers. He said he doesn’t want much. He just wants something that was hers.”
I looked at the box on my kitchen table.
The Drive to Bellhaven
I called him myself. I don’t know why I thought that was the right move, but Paula gave me his number and I just — dialed it. Eleven o’clock at night. I didn’t think about the time until it was already ringing.
He answered on the second ring.
His voice was low, careful. The kind of voice that’s learned to be careful.
I told him who I was. I told him I’d bought the house. I told him what I’d found in the basement.
He didn’t say anything for a long time.
Then he said, “I wrote her forty-seven letters.”
“I know,” I said. “I counted them.”
Another silence.
“She kept them,” he said. And his voice did something I’m not going to try to describe.
I drove to Bellhaven on a Saturday in early October. The leaves were going brown at the edges, the sky that flat gray that means the season has made up its mind. I had the box on the passenger seat. I’d thought about whether to bring everything — the birth certificate, the hair, all of it — and in the end I just brought all of it, because none of it was mine to edit.
Carl answered the door. Big guy, late sixties, white hair cut short. He shook my hand and said, “He’s been up since four.”
Richard was in the living room. He was smaller than I’d pictured, which is a stupid thing to notice, but there it is. Thin, gray, glasses with a crack in one lens that had been taped. He stood up when I came in and then didn’t seem to know what to do with his hands.
I put the box on the coffee table.
He looked at it for a second. Then he sat back down.
“Can I —” he started.
“It’s yours,” I said.
What He Found
He went through it slowly.
Carl brought coffee that I didn’t drink. I sat in a chair across the room and tried to look at something other than Richard’s face, which was hard because the room wasn’t big and there wasn’t much else to look at.
He read each letter. All forty-seven. In order. It took a long time.
He held the lock of hair for maybe two minutes without moving.
The birth certificate he looked at the longest. Specifically the blank line where a father’s name should have been. I watched him look at it and I watched his jaw do something, and then he set it down on the stack with the others.
He didn’t cry, or if he did it was the kind that doesn’t make noise.
When he was done he put everything back in the box. Carefully, the way you’d pack something you were going to carry a long distance.
“She never wrote back,” he said. Not to me, not really.
“No,” I said.
“I used to think —” He stopped. Started again. “I used to think maybe the letters didn’t get through. That they lost them somehow, or somebody at the institution was keeping them.”
He touched the edge of the box.
“But she had them.”
There’s nothing to say to that. I didn’t try.
Carl put his hand on Richard’s shoulder, and Richard put his hand over Carl’s, and I looked at the window.
What I Know Now
I’ve been back in the house for two months since then.
I finished the basement. Dave came back, patched the hole where the false wall had been, poured new concrete over a section of floor that had cracked. It looks like a regular basement now. Slightly too clean in one corner.
I still don’t know who Richard’s father was. I don’t know why Dolores built the false wall, whether she did it herself or had someone do it, or whether she put the box behind it when she built the wall or years later. I don’t know if she ever stood in that little room and read the letters, or if she just kept them in the dark.
I don’t know what she thought she was doing, at twenty-six or thirty, signing whatever papers she signed. People say it was a different time and that’s true and it also doesn’t mean anything.
Richard sends me a text every few weeks. Nothing heavy — a weather complaint, a photo of Carl’s bad cooking, once a picture of a red door he’d spotted on a house in town and thought I’d want to see.
I didn’t tell him about the drawing, the one with the red door.
I meant to. I still might.
The house is good now. Warm. The fluorescent light in the kitchen finally got replaced — I did it myself on a Sunday afternoon in November, stood on a step stool for twenty minutes figuring out the wiring.
When I turned it on, the kitchen looked completely different.
Funny how that works.
