King Charles is well-known for his efforts to bring a modern touch to the British monarchy. As part of his royal duties, he often takes time to engage with the public, and he’s not shy about sharing a good-natured quip or two. This was exactly the case during Donald and Melania Trump’s second state visit to the UK. Charles gave Melania a warm welcome, accompanied by a cheeky joke that left her amused.

Back in July, King Charles extended an invitation to Donald Trump. It was a historic moment as President Trump and the First Lady, Melania, arrived in the UK on September 16, marking two state visits for a sitting U.S. president.
During their visit, Donald Trump and King Charles spent ample time together, while Melania was engaged in activities with Kate Middleton and Queen Camilla. The royal welcome began with a greeting from Prince William and Kate, followed by an audience with King Charles and Queen Camilla.
True to his character, King Charles is known for his cordial interactions with the public, often sprinkling in humor. In a popular video from last December, King Charles was spotted in Notting Hill, London, having a chat with a group of surprised American tourists who didn’t expect to see the monarch.
In a light-hearted exchange, Charles said with a touch of humor, “I’m so sorry you’re being barred from getting on your way,” and in reference to the drizzly UK weather, he asked jokingly, “Not getting too wet, are you?”
An Amusing Encounter as King Charles Meets Melania
While sharing jokes with everyday citizens might come easily, one might assume it would be different with high-profile dignitaries. However, King Charles seems just as comfortable in such situations.
During the meeting at Windsor Castle, a lip reader has reportedly observed that King Charles shared a humorous comment with Melania Trump. The First Lady wore a striking, large purple hat that occasionally obscured her eyes during the encounter.
Forensic lipreader Nicola Hickling conveyed to Metro that the exchange began with Donald Trump expressing respect, “How are you doing, it’s a pleasure, Your Majesty. Thank you for inviting me.”
King Charles then turned to Melania and humorously commented, “I do hope the wind doesn’t blow away your hat,” leading to laughter from Melania.
Melania’s hats, often remarkable in their styling, have consistently drawn public interest. On her husband’s Inauguration Day, she chose a similar hat that also sparked conversation.
Insight Behind Melania’s Fashion Choice
Fashion stylist Marian Kwei, who works at Vogue, confidently asserts that Melania’s specific choice of the wide-brimmed hat was very deliberate for the meeting with King Charles and other senior Royal Family members.
According to Marian Kwei, “The wide-brimmed hat that hides her face signals an intent to keep the spotlight on her husband and his objectives during their visit,” as she explained to the BBC.
