Hiker Found Alive After 10 Days Lost in Mountains Shares Harrowing Survival Story

A man who went missing while hiking in California has revealed chilling details of his survival ordeal after being rescued.

Lukas McClish Set Out for a Short Hike

It was a warm June 11 when Lukas McClish set out on a hike in the Santa Cruz Mountains, expecting a pleasant three-hour excursion. Sadly, it turned into a 10-day nightmare. McClish, accustomed to frequent hiking, didn’t think twice about not wearing a shirt.

Lost and Alone

When McClish didn’t show up for a Father’s Day dinner, he was reported missing. He had been out there for six days already. He shared with ABC 7 LA that finding his way through the now charred landscape, severely affected by wildfires, was challenging. He explained, “That’s one thing that I didn’t take into consideration — when the fire comes through like that and decimates it, it turns into the desert, and you’re unable to find your bearings.”

A Terrifying Encounter

Throughout his ordeal, McClish managed to find a water source, which was a small relief. But water wasn’t his only concern. At one point, he noticed a mountain lion stalking him. Fortunately, the animal kept its distance. McClish recounted, “He kept his distance, he was a pretty cool lion, I guess.”

Survival Strategies

With his fair skin and lack of proper clothing, McClish had to find ways to protect himself from the harsh sun. He also faced the challenge of finding food, surviving on wild berries when his body craved something more substantial.

Desperate Calls for Help

Day after day, McClish called out in hopes of being found. “Just ‘Help, help. I’m over here.’ Or ‘Is anybody out there? I want a burrito and a taco bowl,’” he said. After five days of being lost, he began to grasp the severity of his situation, clinging to the thought of his favorite foods to keep his spirits up. “Every day I hoped they would find me before 8 p.m. so I could get a burrito and taco bowl,” he added.

Rescue and Relief

McClish’s rescue came following a thorough multi-agency search. Once taken to the hospital and declared healthy, he finally got to savor that burrito and taco bowl he’d dreamt about—truly the most satisfying meal of his life.

This gripping story is a sobering reminder of the unpredictable power of nature and the resilient spirit required for survival. His return is both a celebration of life and a cautionary tale for outdoor adventurers. Stay safe, prepared, and always let someone know your plans. Happy hiking!
