A heartbreaking accident occurred in suburban New York when a 6-year-old boy and his mom were struck by a school bus while crossing the street, according to authorities.
The tragic incident happened on the morning of Thursday, June 20, around 8:30 a.m. The boy and his mother were on their way to Mamaroneck Avenue Elementary School in the village of Mamaroneck, N.Y., when they were hit by a mini-bus.
Mamaroneck village police reported to the Journal News that the young boy was declared deceased at the scene. His 43-year-old mother was taken to a nearby hospital, where she sadly succumbed to her injuries later, confirmed the school district.
“Earlier today, we informed you of the tragic news that one of our MAS kindergarten students passed away after being struck by a vehicle while walking to school with his mother,” stated the district in a heartfelt message to the community. “It is with a heavy heart that we now share that the child’s mother has also passed away as a result of her injuries.”
Understanding the gravity of the situation, the district continued, “There is nothing more difficult for a community to experience than the loss of life, and we know that everyone in the Mamaroneck and Larchmont communities is heartbroken by this news.”
Police shared with the Journal News and News 12 Westchester that several parents and children were also crossing the street when the bus was turning.
The initial investigation indicated that the bus had a green light while turning, and the parents and children were crossing with a walk signal.
Thankfully, no one on the bus was injured, according to News 12. The bus driver, who has not been named publicly, is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation. Authorities have not made any charges at this time.
The Journal News reported that a Royal Coach Lines bus was present at the crash site. This company, a major school contractor in Westchester County, has not yet commented on a request for a statement.
The investigation includes reviewing surveillance footage, as per authorities, who described the accident as a “tragic circumstance.”
“We also know that the death of a child is particularly difficult for other children to process,” the school district’s statement continued. “At this time, we have informed our staff of this incredible loss, and social workers and psychologists are fully deployed at MAS.” The district assured that a crisis team and counselors would be available for students and staff on the following Friday, with classes dismissing at the usual time.
“Our goal is to maintain as much normalcy for our students and staff as possible while also being thoughtful and respectful of needs and emotions,” the district added thoughtfully.
