A nurse and mother of five recounts the frustrating experience she had on a flight where a young child, despite parental attempts, continued the disruptive behavior.
A plane passenger found support on TikTok after sharing an unpleasant experience during her flight.
In a video posted on Monday, June 17, Shayla Monnier detailed an incident on a flight from Atlanta to Denver. A child seated in front of her turned around and blew a raspberry, causing spit to land “all over” her face and her husband’s arm.
Monnier mentioned that the girl appeared to be between 3 and 5 years old, an age where she believes the child should understand that such behavior is inappropriate.
“I was kind of shocked,” said Monnier, a nurse and mother of five.
According to Monnier, the child’s parents tried to stop her, but she continued to resist and repeated the act, turning around once more to blow raspberries.
“This time, I put my hand up just to block the spit from me, and her parents tried to make her sit down, but she fought,” Monnier shared, noting that the child was seated between her mother and father.

Monnier described that the child turned around a third time, and more spit went everywhere.
In a follow-up video about the messy incident, Monnier asked, “Is everyone practicing gentle parenting these days? Because I’m not okay with it if you’re spitting in my face.”
She admitted her frustration, mentioning, “My husband lost his cool.”
“The first time it happened, we were both just so shocked,” she recalled. “The parents acted like they cared, but it wouldn’t have happened a second and third time if they truly did.”
“After the third time, my husband firmly told the parents, ‘If you don’t get your kid under control, I’ll do it for you.’”
Monnier’s husband even suggested that the child wear a mask, especially since both parents were wearing them.
“The mother then snapped, saying, ‘If you had kids, maybe you’d understand.’ My husband replied, ‘We have five children and six grandchildren, and not one of them would do something like that,’” Monnier recounted.
A flight attendant overheard the commotion and requested that the parents put a mask on the child.
Changing seats wasn’t an option as the flight was full, and due to the incident causing a spectacle, no one nearby was willing to switch places.

Monnier mentioned that if the flight attendant hadn’t intervened, her next move would have been to hold up a magazine to block the spit.
She noted that the child had been asleep for most of the flight and wasn’t simply restless.
Many TikTok users commended Monnier and her husband for their handling of the situation. The crew even offered them free flight credits for enduring the stress.
“100% agree with how you and your husband responded!” commented one person.
“Gentle parenting doesn’t mean letting your kid get away with inappropriate behavior!” read another comment.

“Parents today are failing with this gentle approach,” another commenter said. “Your actions were spot on!”
PEOPLE spoke with travel expert Nicole Campoy Jackson, who said Monnier and her husband’s response was “perfectly reasonable.”
“They asked for help from the parents, but the child continued the behavior,” Jackson added. “At this point, one of the parents could have taken the child for a walk down the aisle to discuss the behavior before returning to the seat.”
Jackson noted that while it’s difficult to judge the parents’ response without knowing their situation, the flight attendant handled it well by requesting the parents to mask the child, providing a trained and professional resolution.
Jackson emphasized that traveling with children can be a learning opportunity.
“Traveling with kids is undoubtedly stressful,” she said. “But part of the experience is teaching them respectful behavior toward others during travel.”
