The Secret Service agent used his weapon during the robbery, according to authorities
A member of the U.S. Secret Service was robbed at gunpoint in Los Angeles, Calif. on the same night that President Joe Biden hosted his star-studded campaign fundraiser in the city.
The Tustin Police Department shared in a press release that officers responded to a call of a robbery that occurred at the Tustin Fields residential community on Saturday, June 15, at approximately 9:36 p.m. local time.
After officers arrived at the scene, they determined that a member of the U.S. Secret Service had had his bag stolen “at gunpoint” and that “during the incident an officer (agent) involved shooting occurred,” per the release.
Officers were eventually able to locate “some” of the U.S. Secret Service member’s “belongings in the area.” The police did not detail what items may have been stolen during the robbery.
Authorities said they were unable to locate any suspects at the time and did not know whether they may have been injured during the incident.
The Tustin Police Department said it is still searching for the suspects and is asking for the public’s help in identifying the people involved. They noted that a 2004-2006 silver Infiniti FX35 or similar car had been seen leaving the scene of the crime and shared a black-and-white photo of the vehicle.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Secret Service said that the agent was returning from a work assignment when they were “the victim of an armed robbery.”
“The employee discharged their service weapon during the incident but unknown if the assailants were struck,” the statement continued. “We are thankful that the employee did not sustain any injuries.”
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, per the spokesperson.
The robbery occurred the same night as Biden’s 2024 campaign fundraiser, which was held at the Peacock Theater and featured former president Barack Obama and several other celebrities including George Clooney, Julia Roberts and Jimmy Kimmel.
The fundraiser was a culmination of four months of planning with tickets going anywhere from $250 to $125,000 per ticket. Biden previously held a similar event in New York City in March that brought the campaign a record $25 million.
Per the Associated Press, Saturday’s fundraiser brought in over $30 million, according to Biden’s campaign.
