We’ve seen our fair share of adoption posts for animals looking for homes, but some really do stand out as extra special and unique.
Recently, a shelter announced they have a parrot named Pepper up for adoption — but be warned, his vocabulary is quite shocking.
Parrots are fascinating pets because of their ability to mimic human speech. However, it’s essential to be cautious about what you say around them, as they might just repeat phrases you’d rather not hear in polite company.
This is especially true for a white-fronted Amazon parrot named Pepper, who recently arrived at the Niagara SPCA in Niagara Falls, New York, as a surrender.
Now, Pepper is up for adoption — but the shelter warns that his language might not be suitable for everyone, dubbing him a “foul-mouthed” parrot.
“If you think Pepper’s feathers are colorful, just wait till you hear his language,” the Niagara SPCA shared on Facebook. “Forget ‘does Polly want a cracker?’ The real question is: ‘Does Pepper want to kick your a$$?!’”
Pepper’s colorful language might be off-putting to some, but the SPCA believes he could be a perfect match for a “humor-loving home” and might even have some perks.
“Bringing home a cursing conure might sound fun until Pepper offends grandma’s Tuesday night knitting circle,” they wrote. “On the bright side, if you’d like to keep unwanted visitors from dropping by, adopt Pepper. They’ll think twice after being cussed out by your new feathered friend.”
The SPCA mentioned that Pepper will be available for adoption this week. They are considering serious applications only from families with bird experience and appropriate housing.
If a swearing parrot isn’t quite your thing, the shelter is also looking to place six parakeets and a Sun Conure named Peanut up for adoption.
While many adoption posts focus on the positive traits of an adoptable pet, sometimes honesty about their quirks can be beneficial. While a swearing bird may not be everyone’s ideal pet, for someone else, it could be a dream come true.
Indeed, many people commented expressing their admiration for Pepper and his spicy vocabulary.
“I’ve never wanted a bird until reading this post,” a Facebook commenter wrote.
“I love him even more because he swears! What a straightforward sweetheart he is,” another added.
It’s unclear if Pepper’s language can be “cleaned up” — like washing his beak out with soap. Once parrots learn those four-letter words, it’s quite the challenge to make them stop.
Take the staff at Britain’s Lincolnshire Wildlife Park, for example. They discovered five of their African Grey parrots were shocking visitors with foul phrases like “f**k off” and “fat t**t.”
After a brief removal, these parrots were reintroduced as the “infamous swearing parrots,” embracing their reputation. The zoo has tried to rehabilitate them by integrating them with 92 non-swearing parrots, hoping their language might improve — although it could also worsen.
“We could end up with 100 swearing parrots,” the park’s chief executive Steve Nichols told the BBC. “Only time will tell.”
UPDATE:
The SPCA has received over 400 applications to adopt Pepper, including from a saloon owner and an ex-Navy sailor. They are prioritizing homes best suited for Pepper, narrowing the applicants down to 10.
Pepper will receive an avian vet check-up next week ahead of his adoption. The SPCA also shared a short video of Pepper, though he doesn’t swear in it:
This unique parrot truly deserves to find the perfect home with someone who can appreciate his cheeky nature! 🤣
