Shelter rescues neglected dog covered in three pounds of matted fur — he looks completely different after makeover

Ever stumbled upon a super-stubborn mat in your hair? Now, imagine that but covering your entire body. Yeah, sounds like a nightmare, right? This isn’t just the nightmare of a bad hair day – it was reality for one poor pooch saved from the brink. Brace yourselves, dear readers, because today’s tails – I mean, tales – about man’s best friend overcoming some really ruff times.

Our story kicks off not with a woof but with a whimper. The South Plains SPCA recently unveiled what they called the “worst case of dog neglect ever.” Picture this: a 6-year-old dog so laden with matted fur that he looked like he had sprung straight out of a particularly melodramatic pet horror movie. Rotten skin spots, fur tangled into the skin, and nails looking like they belonged to a velociraptor, this poor pup had been through the wringer.

“His hair had matted for about five years,” Kim Moyers, the president of the South Plains SPCA, spilled the gory details to KLBK-TV. “It’s just awful that he wandered around, overlooked and unloved, in that terrifying state. I mean, how could anyone miss him?”

Naturally, our heroic SPCA crew couldn’t just stand by. They took him in and gave him a fitting name – Matt. I mean, talk about leaning into your identity. The team knew they had a colossal task ahead: transforming this matted mess into a dapper doggo.

But, alas, adventures aren’t without their hurdles. Matt yelped in pain with every snip of the scissors, leading the team to sedate him for grooming. They cut away embedded collars, leashes, and about three pounds of fur that was basically a five-year carpet nightmare. I mean, we’re talking about matted fur filled with goathead stickers, sticks, grass, and – wait for it – beetles! Poor Matt even had bruises from his fur’s tight grip.

Of course, the vet’s report wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Matt was anemic and had some catching up to do on his medical treatments, including the dreaded dental work – yikes! But, silver linings, folks! He was heartworm negative and tick-free because, let’s face it, even the fleas didn’t dare to wade through that hairy jungle.

After his makeover, Matt was unrecognizable – in the best possible way. He looked like he just stepped off the cover of Canine Vogue. One of the SPCA’s professional groomers (also an avid foster) waved their magic grooming wand and – voila! – Matt transformed into a bona fide heartthrob. “He’s just drop-dead gorgeous,” gushed Houston to People.

And after waking up from his grooming sedation, Matt’s personality burst forth like a ray of sunshine through storm clouds. This “sweet boy” started experiencing the joys of life anew. Imagine his first walk, five years’ worth of untangled freedom – tail wagging, butt wiggling in pure glee. Picture it: Matt embracing his new beginnings, one furry step at a time. Who’s a good boy? Matt’s a good boy!

So, here’s to Matt, and every dog like him, finding the love they’ve always deserved – and, of course, the fabulous makeovers to match. Remember, folks, every dog has its day, especially after a good haircut!”
