Jesus On Adultery And Divorce

The sixth commandment says thou shall not commit adultery.

Marriage is a mutual promise made to God by a man and woman. The words used are similar to:

“I take you for my lawful wife/husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and health, until death does us part.”

The couple generally makes their promise during the Holy Mass and receive both the Sacrament of Matrimony and the Holy Eucharist.

Being such a sacred promise, Jesus condemned anyone who even desired a married woman as committing adultery in their heart, as well as those who divorce, except for immorality, and anyone who marries a divorcee, as committing adultery.

Jesus added, “If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away! It is better to lose one of your members than to have your whole body go into hell”. (Matthew 5:27-32, Mark 9:43-48, Luke 16:18)

THOUGHT

A good relationship means avoiding selfishness as well as giving, listening, admitting mistakes, being open to each other and open to change. Then in times of need, supporting and trusting.

REFLECTION

Lord Jesus, we pray for all married couples. Give them the grace to remain faithful to their promise, no matter the temptation. Lord hear our prayer.

PRAYER: DAY BY DAY (ST RICHARD OF CHICHESTER)

Praise be to Thee, O Lord Jesus Christ
For all the benefits you have given us,
for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us.
O most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother,
May we see you more clearly,
Love you more dearly,
and follow You more nearly.
Day by day. Amen
