A woman who faced severe injuries after a police car she was detained in was hit by a train in 2022 has been awarded a multi-million dollar settlement.
Yareni Rios-Gonzalez will receive $8.5 million following her lawsuit against the cities of Platteville and Fort Lupton, as reported by multiple sources including The Washington Post, CBS affiliate KCNC, Fox affiliate KDVR, and Colorado Public Radio.
“This was an excellent result for our client considering the very small municipalities involved and limited insurance available,” said Paul Wilkinson, Rios-Gonzalez’ attorney, in a statement. “Our client continues to heal but is happy to move on to a new chapter in her life.”
According to the filed complaint, Sgt. Pablo Cesar Vazquez of the Platteville Police Department responded to a reported road-rage incident involving a firearm on September 16, 2022. Rios-Gonzalez had parked her car on Weld County Road 36, leaving her car just past the tracks, while Vazquez stopped his police vehicle
