Hikers find scared, injured lost dog on trail — go the extra mile to get her to safety

It’s always heartwarming to witness people going out of their way to help animals in need. Recently, two hikers exemplified this kindness when they discovered a lost and frightened dog on a mountain trail and made remarkable efforts to ensure the dog got home safely.

The story came to light through a post by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. On November 19, two hikers traversing Colorado’s Meyers Ranch Park stumbled upon a dog with no owner in sight. The poor creature was both scared and injured.

In an attempt to rescue the dog, one hiker tried to carry it down the mountain, but in its frightened state, the dog bit the hiker.

Despite the bite, the hikers remained determined to help. The uninjured hiker stayed with the dog while the bitten hiker descended the trail to seek medical attention and inform authorities about the dog’s situation.

Accompanied by Jeffco Open Space Rangers and Animal Control Officers, the hiker returned to the dog’s location. Remarkably, one of the rangers recognized the dog from a lost dog poster displayed in the area.

The dedicated team managed to safely carry the injured dog down the mountain and promptly contacted its owner. To everyone’s astonishment, the dog named Nova had been missing for two long months!

Although Nova sustained a broken leg, she is now recovering comfortably at home.

Nova’s survival, despite being alone and injured for such an extended period, stands as a remarkable testament to her resilience. Her eventual reunion with her owner became a reality thanks to the extraordinary efforts of the hikers and authorities.

Sharing the story just before Thanksgiving, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office highlighted the heartwarming rescue: “We wanted to share this story of thanksgiving for the acts of kindness shown to a lost pet.”

In their post, they added, “A special thanks to everyone involved in helping Nova return home!”

We’re overjoyed that Nova is safe and reunited with her family! Kudos to everyone who played a part in rescuing this poor dog!
