Couple Went to Shelter to Donate Supplies – Came Home with More Than They Expected

Meet Beth and Michael Clark, a compassionate couple who spend their winters donating blankets and supplies to animal shelters, offering warmth and comfort to dogs in need.

In December 2015, their visit to Anne Arundel County Animal Control turned out to be more than just an act of kindness. They ended up bringing home an elderly dog named Rocky, who was 17 years old and desperately needed love.

“I saw this gray-faced, skinny dog and I said to my husband, ‘We’re getting him,’” Beth recounted. “I couldn’t bear to leave that old guy to die in a cage.”

Beth shared, “Rocky made our life very complete.”

“He enjoyed dancing with us and being close. As time went on, it became difficult for him to climb the stairs or go for walks. So, my husband would carry him upstairs every night just so he could sleep near us. Instead of walks, we would simply sit outside together, soaking up the sun.”

Special Families Opening Their Hearts to Senior Dogs

Robin Catlett, an administrator at Anne Arundel County Animal Control, spoke about the increasing number of families adopting senior dogs.

“It takes a special family to embrace a pet they might only have for a short time,” Robin explained. “We do our best to keep the animals comfortable, but it’s no substitute for a loving home.”

When Beth found out she was expecting, she shared her joy with Today, mentioning how Rocky became gentler with her as her pregnancy progressed. Rocky supported Beth throughout her pregnancy.

Rocky’s Health Started to Decline

To announce their pregnancy, Beth and Michael posted a picture of Rocky with a sign that read, “Mom and Dad are getting me a human!”

However, when Beth was seven months pregnant, Rocky’s health deteriorated. The vet suspected he might have a tumor.

The day they brought their newborn daughter home, Rocky greeted her with a gentle sniff and rested his head near hers. Unfortunately, Rocky’s health continued to decline, and the Clarks knew it was time to say their goodbyes.

“I called a vet, and that night, Rocky passed away peacefully with his family around him,” Beth said. “Our love for him is indescribable, and adjusting to life without him has been incredibly hard.”

The Clarks believe Rocky held on just long enough to meet his new human sister.

Beth and Michael, you’re true animal advocates! Thank you for adopting Rocky and giving him the love and joy in his final years.
