The actress also teased that the newest installment has shaped up to be her “favorite season” yet
It’s almost time to head back to Serenity!
Sweet Magnolias star JoAnna Garcia Swisher revealed on Instagram that filming for season 4 of the hit Netflix series has wrapped. She posed with her costars Brooke Elliott and Heather Headley, calling them “two of my favorite humans.”
Garcia Swisher, now 44 years old, teased that it’s “been a magical season…for reasons I cannot wait to share” as she reflected on filming over the last several months.
“That’s a wrap on Season 4! I cannot wait for you all to see what we have been up to in Serenity,” the star, who plays Maddie, wrote in her post’s caption. “I always get a little emotional when we wrap. It’s bittersweet. There is a huge sense of accomplishment for all the hard work, crazy hours, and time spent bringing this story to life. There is also an overwhelming sense of gratitude.”
She continued, “The majority of our crew has been with us since the beginning. We have lived, loved, and laughed through a lot of life together. Even the newest members of our family have felt like we have known each other forever and they were that missing piece to making things just right.”
The actress mentioned that season 4 is “BY FAR my favorite season…not just for the OMG moments (there are many of them!), but because it was a joy to make” and hinted, “And, in many ways, it feels like we are just getting started.”
She concluded her lengthy caption with a toast to her costars Elliott, who plays Dana Sue, and Headley, who plays Helen, writing: “The three of us are just one piece of a world (on the screen and off) that makes Serenity and @sweetmagnoliasnetflix what it is. We love getting to share it all with you!”
Since its premiere in May 2020, the series has struck a chord with viewers. It follows best friends Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen, who are affectionately known as the “Sweet Magnolias.” The trio navigates romantic relationships, family life, and careers in the small town of Serenity.
Season 2 was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic but eventually premiered in February 2022. The most recent season dropped in July 2023.
The show, based on romance novels by Sherryl Woods, is “about women that absolutely, wholeheartedly support each other,” Garcia Swisher said ahead of season 2.
“They don’t always agree, but they are each other’s biggest advocate and they’re never alone in life because they have each other. And that’s a really beautiful testament to what friendship can be,” she added of her character and her best friends’ dynamic.
Seasons 1-3 of Sweet Magnolias can be streamed on Netflix.
