It’s not uncommon for homeowners to worry about having troublesome neighbors. But what happens when a neighbor makes such a bold change to their house that it becomes hard to ignore?
One man in a suburb of Austin, Texas, has sparked some controversy by painting his house a bright Pepto-Bismol pink, much to the dismay of his local residents.
In many U.S. neighborhoods, a Homeowners Association (HOA) helps maintain consistency in the appearance of houses and funds community amenities. However, Emilio Rodriguez moved to Pflugerville, Texas, with a specific purpose in mind: he wanted his home to be free from the constraints of an HOA.
Emilio’s unique choice to paint his house pink has turned a few heads and ruffled some feathers among his neighbors.
“I love this house. I don’t know why people don’t like it,” Emilio shared in an interview with CBS17. When he purchased his home, it was a neutral beige color. Now, it boasts his favorite color, and Emilio has plans to expand the pink to other parts of his house.
Pink Keeps Him Happy
While neighbors are concerned about the property values potentially dropping due to the new color, Emilio, who uses a wheelchair following a car accident and various health issues, remains unfazed. The pink hue of his house brings him joy.
He further explains that the color supports the city’s famous motto, “Keep Austin Weird.”

How do you feel about Emilio’s colorful choice? Personally, I believe that learning to love your neighbor is key. Having a uniquely colored house can actually make it easier for friends, delivery people, and guests to find your home. I can recall having a neighbor with a similarly colored house, and she turned out to be one of the best neighbors we ever had. With time, you’ll likely get used to it.
