The actress, originally named Emily Stone, attended the 2024 Cannes Film Festival on May 18.
It’s a rare moment when Emma Stone is called by her birth name, Emily.
During a press event at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival on May 18, the 35-year-old actress lit up as a reporter called her Emily while posing a question about her latest movie, Kinds of Kindness.
With a gleeful smile, Stone turned to the film’s director, Yorgos Lanthimos, and excitedly remarked, “That’s my name!”
In an April interview with Hollywood Reporter, Stone shared that she adopted the professional name Emma because another actress was already registered as Emily Stone.
Asked if anyone still calls her by her birth name, she said, “Once people know me well, like my colleagues, they do.”
She laughed about her past name dilemma, admitting, “A few years ago, I had a mini crisis and thought, ‘I can’t do this anymore.’ I told everyone to call me Emily.”
Emma, or Emily if you prefer, stated she doesn’t mind either name but has a soft spot for her birth name, adding, “I would love to be called Emily. That would be so nice.”
Stone’s new film, Kinds of Kindness, is her fifth collaboration with director Lanthimos, following her Oscar-winning performance in Poor Things (2023). The movie features an ensemble cast including Willem Dafoe, Joe Alwyn, Jesse Plemons, Margaret Qualley, Hunter Schafer, and Hong Chau. It tells the intertwining stories of a man trying to control his life, a policeman with a missing wife, and a woman searching for someone with a distinct talent.
Stone attended the press conference the day after gracing the red carpet in a glamorous burgundy Louis Vuitton gown.
At the event, Stone expressed her deep comfort working with Lanthimos, remarking, “With him, I feel like I can do anything. Our trust is unmatched and grows stronger with every project.”
She shared that their professional synergy feels mutual, saying, “As much as he’s called me his muse, he’s absolutely mine. We have such a synchronized vision and understanding.”
Their partnership has been a decade in the making since they first worked together on The Favourite, which cemented their creative bond.
“We’ve got a shared taste and view of the world, both in stories and characters. It’s pretty special,” Stone added.
Be sure to watch Kinds of Kindness when it hits theatres on June 21!
