Drew Carey, a beloved TV personality, is courageously opening up about his mental health challenges from his youth. Recently, on an episode of Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?, the 65-year-old host of The Price is Right shared some heartfelt insights into the tough times he faced during his late teens and early 20s.
“I think that suicide attempts were calls for help,” Carey revealed, reflecting on the two attempts he made during those turbulent years. “I was so mad that everybody was having a good time, and I was just tired of my life and thinking, ‘Who’s gonna miss me?’ I still have those thoughts sometimes, like, ‘Who’s gonna miss me?’”
Carey continued with a candid confession, “Often, I think, if I die, I’ll just have my body cremated. No funeral, none of that. All my keepsakes? Just burn them or give them away. Like, who cares?”
This isn’t the first time the comedian has opened up about his struggle with depression. Back in 2007, he spoke about those darker days but also highlighted the positive steps he’s taken to move forward.
“I learned how to believe in myself,” Carey explained. “I learned how to set goals. I read every self-help book I could get hold of, and I still do. I’m always striving to become bigger, better, stronger, and happier.”
In his recent interview, Carey shared some of the valuable strategies that help him cope with depression today.
“For example, I’ve learned not to take things personally. When someone wrote a bad review, I used to take it as a personal attack, like they were coming after my livelihood. Now, I’ve let go of all that.”
