DJ Qualls Reveals He’s Engaged to ‘Supernatural’ Costar Ty Olsson: ‘We’re Going to Be Old Men Together’
“Over the last 10 years our relationship evolved to what it is today,” Qualls said of his relationship with Olsson
Supernatural stars DJ Qualls and Ty Olsson are engaged!
The actor, 45, shared the exciting news on the May 15 episode of his Locked and Probably Loaded podcast with Kelly Blackheart. During the episode, he explained how he and Olsson connected after meeting and built a solid bond over the years, which eventually blossomed into love.
“Ty and I became inseparable right from the start,” Qualls shared. “And over the last 10 years, our relationship has grown into what it is now, and yes, we’re getting married.”
Qualls, known for playing the werewolf Garth on the series, fondly remembered meeting his fiancé, who portrayed the vampire Benny, at a fan convention for the popular CW show. He revealed they “hardly knew each other,” adding, “We maybe exchanged just a few words at the Supernatural convention, and then we ended up in London for four or five days together.”
“I was planning a trip to Turkey with a friend — and Ty, being the kind-hearted and genuine person he is, approached and asked, ‘Can I join you on your trip?’” the Z Nation actor reminisced.
“I thought, ‘That’s so bold!’ I could never invite myself on someone else’s trip. I’d be scared they’d reluctantly say yes and secretly not want me there. But Ty’s invitation was so sincere and wonderful, and that’s just who he is,” Qualls added. “We didn’t know each other well back then, but it marked the start of a beautiful friendship.”
Qualls went on to describe Olsson as one of the most remarkable individuals he’s ever met.
“It’s amazing to think that this person who was just my friend is now someone I think about constantly. He sends the most uplifting messages, supports me, and loves me unconditionally,” Qualls continued.
The Turning Point actor also noted during the podcast that he believes “unconditional love” requires mutual respect and having each other’s best interests at heart, something Olsson has always shown him.
“Ty was the first person in my life to give me that,” Qualls said. “He started as just a friend, quickly becoming the best friend I’ve ever had, and now we’re planning to grow old together. It’s wonderfully surreal.”
Following the announcement, many fans of the show congratulated the couple on social media. One fan commented on X (formerly known as Twitter), “Congratulations DJ Qualls and Ty Olsson. What a wonderful time to be alive!”
Reacting to the warm messages from fans, Olsson shared on X on Thursday, May 16, “Thank you everyone for all the love and support today 🙂 Sending you all some love and hugs.”
