The exes starred in the hit show ‘Flip or Flop’ together for 9 years, even after their split in 2016
Christina Hall and Tarek El Moussa are getting back together — professionally!
The exes, who starred in the HGTV hit Flip or Flop for 9 years, even after their split, until ending the show in 2022, will appear in a new series, The Flip Off.
The cheekily named spin off will feature Christina and her new husband, realtor Josh Hall, competing against Tarek and his new wife, Selling Sunset alum Heather El Moussa. According to a release from the network, the friendly exes will “throw down” to see who can “find, buy, renovate and flip a house for the biggest financial gain.”
The series, which was announced on Wednesday, May 15, is slated to air in early 2025.
“I never thought I’d be doing this,” Christina says in a voiceover in the dramatic trailer, above, shared Wednesday morning in a joint post from all four stars and HGTV.
“This is one of the defining moments of my life,” Tarek adds. The 30-second teaser is scored by a song with lyrics including, “Did you try to dismiss me? You thought I was history. But now you gotta deal with me. I’m back with a vengeance,” which plays as Tarek and Heather step out of gleaming cars in all-black outfits.
The day before the announcement, Tarek, Christina and Heather appeared together in an Instagram post that raised eyebrows and poked fun at fans’ long-standing jokes about the two women’s similar appearances.
In the clip, shared by all three stars on Instagram Tuesday, Heather and Christina stand side by side in matching black strapless tops and jeans. “Hi I’m Christina,” Heather, 36, says in the video. “I’m Heather!,” Christina, 40, replies.
Heather continues, “Wait no, that’s not right.” The pair then start twirling their matching blonde locks as Christina jokes with a shrug, “Must be all that bleach.”
The camera then pans out to show Tarek, 42, who is currently married to Heather and was previously married to Christina, sitting in a chair as the two women stand behind him.
“Well, I guess it is confusing,” he says with a smile.
“I guess you’re not the only ones confused…🤔,” reads the caption of the post. Hall commented, “👯♀️ 🤷🏼♀️” followed by a similar comment from Heather: “👯”
Further down in the comments section, fans were both excited and unsure of how to react at the same time.
“I’m so uncomfortable and proud of you all at the same time! 😂😅🤣 Great sense of humor from everyone! 👏👏👏,” one user wrote.
Another added, “😂😂😂Omg! This is iconic!”
After Christina and Tarek’s very public 2018 divorce following a harrowing incident involving a gun in 2016, the exes continued to film Flip or Flop together for another 6 years.
The later seasons of the show leaned into their sometimes contentious relationship. And a 2021 blow-up between the pair on set revealed things were occasionally even more dramatic behind the scenes.
A source later said Tarek was “super remorseful” that he “lashed out,” but noted, “They’re exes who share a history and children and a workplace, but outside of coparenting, they’re not friends.”
A second source said at the time that the pair are “generally cordial. They’re co-parenting and nothing gets in the way of that,” but added, “the show was just too intimate of a setting at this point and it was time to close that chapter.”
Still, when the announced the conclusion of the series in March 2022 just a week before the final episode aired, they called it “the end of an era.”
“I will be forever grateful to have had a series for a decade,” Christina said at the time. “It’s a huge accomplishment and everyone who worked on the show should be very proud.”
“The series made it through ups and downs and trust me it wasn’t always easy,” she added. “I’m looking forward to my next chapter and working in positive, fun and creative environments. I’m ready to let go of the stress and enjoy life and all it has to offer.”
Tarek expressed a similar sentiment: “I couldn’t be more grateful for the last ten years with Flip Or Flop. The support from our fans, the network and the wild ride that it’s been has been incredible,” he said, adding, “Even though the Flip Or Flop chapter is coming to a close, another exciting one is soon starting.”
Since ending the long-running series, both exes have embarked on their own solo series on the network. Christina currently stars in Christina on the Coast and Christina in the Country with her third husband, Hall.
Tarek first starred in Flipping 101 with Tarek El Moussa and currently appears alongside Heather in The Flipping El Moussas.
Tarek and Christina share two children — daughter Taylor, 13, and son Brayden, 8. Christina also shares son Hudson, 4, with her second husband Ant Anstead, from whom she split in 2020. She married Hall in 2022.
Tarek and Heather, who met during a Fourth of July celebration in 2019, tied the knot in Oct. 2021. They welcomed their son Tristan together in Jan. 2023.
The two couples’ relationships with one another have been rocky over the years.
During a 2022 interview, Heather opened up about her difficulties co-parenting with Christina.
“I haven’t talked about this much because I’m a very happy, positive person, but I felt like I was always second,” she said. “No one ever made me feel that way, but I think when your significant other has such a long relationship with the previous spouse and a lot of love — and it was a very public divorce and you’re coming into it. You fall in love with each other, but you always kind of think of the ex. For me, I did.”
However, Heather and Hall were able to find a common ground.
“I think she realized how much I love the kids and that they are number one to me, over anything. So any drama aside, the kids are the most important thing to all of us.”
These days, things are much easier between the group. On Mother’s Day this year, Tarek and Heather even exchanged bouquets with Christina and Josh.
In 2023, Tarek said while talking about his book Flip Your Life: How to Find Opportunity in Distress — in Real Estate, Business and Life, that his and Christina’s relationship is “better than it’s been ever, since the separation.”
While he describes the months that followed their split as some of his darkest, and in particular, the day he found out that Hall had “moved on” with Anstead, whom she began dating in October 2017, as “devastating,” he holds no more grudges.
“I hold nothing against Christina. I don’t blame her. I understand why she did what she did,” El Moussa says. “We had a lot of hard years through my sicknesses and my mental health struggles from the testosterone. So no ill feelings, and I understand her point of view.”
