Alan Jackson, a well-known country music performer, recently informed his fans and followers of the tragic news. The 62-year-old Grammy winner has Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a degenerative neurological ailment that impairs his balance and reduces the size and function of his muscles. He has admitted to feeling unsafe and uneasy on stage, which may limit his ability to stand on his two feet and perform live.
Despite the devastating news, Jackson remains hopeful that his illness will not prevent him from traveling, but only time will tell if he is correct.
CMT disease is a hereditary condition that Jackson inherited from his father, who also had it, and his grandmother, who also had it. Jackson’s sister is also now battling CMT. The disease has no known cure. Despite being associated with other disorders, such as Parkinson’s and muscular dystrophy, it is not lethal.
During an interview, Jackson addressed his ailment, calling it a “gift” to share it with the public and live his life genuinely rather than trying to hide it. “It’s been bothering me for years, and it’s becoming more noticeable,” he said. “I realize I’m stumbling around on stage.”
“And now I’m having issues balancing, even in front of the microphone, and I’m just feeling incredibly uneasy. I believe it will assist me in putting it out there now.”
Despite the limits imposed by his CMT illness, Jackson has made significant progress in his country music career. He has sold over 45 million albums in the United States, making him one of the best-selling recording artists of all time. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame last year with other country music legends such as Loretta Lynn and Lee Ann Womack. “The first time I ever met Alan, he looked like a scared little child,” Lynn, who was unable to attend Jackson’s formal induction into the hall of fame, recalled of Jackson.
“Backstage, he was practicing his tunes. And I remember looking at him and telling him, ‘You’re going to be one of the best country singers’ because he was so talented. He has not let me down.”
