Jeff Beck, Johnny Depp’s longtime friend, and collaborator has passed away.

The 78-year-old English guitarist died on Tuesday, and a source tells that the Pirates of the Caribbean star, 59, was “at Jeff’s bedside” with “many other rock icons” before his death.

They were quite close, according to the informant, and their connection got even deeper during their summer joint tour. “The disease came on swiftly, and everything deteriorated quickly in the last few weeks.”

“Johnny is still processing this information. According to the source, he is “heartbroken.”

Depp and Beck released their previous year’s album, 18, on July 15.

The band also debuted an official music video for “This Is a Song for Miss Hedy Lamarr,” the album’s lead single.

“It’s an unbelievable joy to play and make music with Jeff, one of the true greats and someone I am now privileged enough to call my brother,” the Sweeney Todd star remarked at the time in a press statement.

“I haven’t had another creative partner like Johnny in ages,” Beck remarked of Depp at the time. “He had a significant impact on this album. I hope people appreciate him as a musician since some don’t believe Johnny Depp can sing rock and roll.”

Other performances included the duo.

Beck’s family stated on Wednesday confirming his death.

“It is with deep and profound regret that we relay the news of Jeff Beck’s passing on behalf of his family,” the statement’s first sentence said. “He abruptly had bacterial meningitis, and yesterday he calmly went away.” His family requests privacy as they mourn this tragic passing.

Beck rose to popularity after replacing Eric Clapton as The Yardbirds’ guitarist in 1965. He has since been a part of numerous famous musical moments, from his work as lead guitarist on Mick Jagger’s debut album. She’s the Boss to the title tune of Ozzy Osbourne’s most recent album, Patient Number 9.
